The Pitch For Project Apario
In 2022, I was left unemployed for a month while Warner Bros Games renewed my contract for employment. I was switching from the Central Game Technologies group (CGT) to the Shared Services (ITSS) group. In that capacity, my roles changed and my responsibilities shifted. Gary was eager to get me away from learning Go and building tooling in Go, and I received an official comment from him that I wasn't allowed to write software in Go, because "nobody knows Go and everybody uses C++". Right. Regardless of those reasons, I decided to decline the offer of employment given to me and accept the contract renewal in exchange for 1 month of forced unpaid time off.
During that time, I built a lot of open source tech that got published on my GitHub account. During that window of opportunity, old connections surfaced that were connected with IN-Q-TEL; however little did I know at the time, that this slide deck was presented to them for funding. My delivery goal of the 1st release of the decentralized Project Apario looked to be a daunting task that no one man could accomplish. Promises were made for an audience that fell upon deaf ears as the listener failed to see what was in it for them. Alas, it is for you but not you.
I declined the choice and proceeded with serving Warner Bros Games in my new capacity. I opened up doors to new business relationships, earned endorsements from my colleagues, and built invaluable tooling to solve some of the toughest challenges facing Warner Bros Games in the P4 space. The watercooler and virtual-thereof had rumors that I was a genius wunderkind who was hired to rescue their crumbling infrastructure around their most core tech, Helix Core, that singularly holds the $6b+ portfolio of the digital assets that become the video games and movies that you've grown to learn and love from WB.
I was revaled, "oh you're the expert they hired?" and immediately began elevating each of the studios individually to engineering excellence. Gary was not happy. He was angry with me over transgender bathroom issues and made a complete fool of himself when he forced me to say to his face "Gary, you need me. You called me, remember? I didn't apply. I didn't call you. You called me. You need me more than I need you. If these are your priorities [transgender bathroom agenda] are not engineering excellency in the delivery of a critical piece of core tech that is wasting millions a year due to poor design and incompetency. Owning without ego is not something capable from Gary, and for that reason, I departed because I have a larger calling and you are part of that larger calling.
